There are many types of geeks in existence, physics geeks, math geeks, gamer geeks, tech geeks, and more commonly otakus. Basically there are mild differences between how an otaku and a geek should be, but the generally accepted idea is that most of them are good at what they do, so you might be a foodie geek for all you might know.

Rule 1: Pick something you are really good at. For one, you cannot be a sleeping geek, no matter how good you are at it. Unless you know the scientific differences between sleeping on conventional mattress vs a tempur mattress, AND you can plot it against an actual economic study relating sleeping and sex, then you are a sleeping geek.

Rule 2: You must snigger in contempt if you know someone is wrong. This is very important, you must snigger or blow up in anger, whether it is in front of the person you are humiliating, or inside your head, or when you go home and blog about it. You MUST understand why that someone is wrong, and write an essay of how (or explain of the equivalent) and why that person is wrong.

Rule 2A: If your objective is to be an irritating geek, remember to validate your claim in such a way that your opponent of choice has no way of retaliation. And remember to be smug about it.

Rule 3: Show your love as a geek. Always carry an item which quantifies you as a geek. For example, if you’re a gamer geek, show it with your uber shirts, character key chains, wow lingo, etc. etc.

Important: What you shouldn’t do is, buy a somewhat geeky item, and TOTALLY not know how to use it, and pretend that you are a geek. This will somewhat lower your social status of being a person, which in certain circles, will cast you down to many levels below a geek status. Also, it is very depressing for someone to carry a chocobo keychain, and NOT know what a chocobo is.

Bonus 3A: If you carry an geeky device, make sure you have hacked it to do “additional features”. ie. jailbreaked your iphone to change a theme. Or your pda can replace your car remote, or your psp can use the latest custom firmware, etc, etc.

Rule 4: Have a favourite weekly read
Scientific America, BBC Weekly, WSJ, Sunday Shonen, Dilbert, etc, etc. This way, you can quote intelligent people and still be a fashionable geek.

Rule 5: You must have a stubborn point of view, which can only be validated by an obscure source, which only a fellow geek will understand. For example, IE6 is baddddd.

Rule 6: Pick a god. When I mean god, I mean supreme entity which you will kneel down and call father to if he/she/it ever appears in front of you. ie. Jimmy Choo, Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Steve Jobs, Hideo Kojima, Satoru Iwata, Nobuo Uematsu, Neil Gaiman, Stan Lee, Rumiko Takahashi, Akira Toriyama, etc, etc.

Hopefully, these 6 points will aid you in your quest to become the geek of your choice! LOL!

Contraire to the popular belief, that’s wrong. There’s probably nothing more wrong (or right) about you as compared to someone 10 years younger than you. In fact, someone younger than you may have more ridiculous issues that make them less desirable (ie, how should I part my hair this morning, what clothes should I wear to look cool, etc etc.)

There are, of course, exceptions to everything, including this myth:

It is by your choice you are single (ie, you are smothering hot, or enjoy swinging too much to take relationships seriously, or you have the I hate wo+men because they are evil syndrome)

You think you have a choice because you are single. This includes the delusional group of people who think they are in the category above.

You haven’t found the “right” one. Do note here that the “right” one, may not always be the “available” one, in which, that’s wrong, regardless of the scenario. Or, you’re waiting for the “wrong” one to become the “right” one, or, you’re waiting for the “right” one to popup magically.

(There are some more points which I can bring to illustrate, but my lawyers tell me there is a limit to the number of people I can piss off on a daily basis, I believe it has something to do with the nonexistent payslip that I keep promising to send them. But come on, that’s what you send nonexistent lawyers isn’t it?)

At this point, you _may_ or _may not_ have realised this, but you will find that the chances for finding mr/mrs “right” magically INCREASES when you hit 30. To be really scientific about this (Not that I really employ any scientific mumbojumbo to any actual facts, but it always makes me look smarter, and more credible whenever I pull up a random statistic, like the fact that I usually do this 34% of the time.)

Again, to be really honest about it, it’s not easier per se. The age of 30 is more or less the socially accepted age to get married in Singapore, which means, whether you realise it or not, you are subconsciously trying harder, or using wider search conditions to find mr/mrs “right”. Nothing magically appears out of nowhere just because you wish for it, except for real magic, but you still have to pay alot for being tricked, which brings us to the main point of this article:

If you want/need to be in a relationship, for goodness sake, please do something about it. Don’t wait until you are 30 to decide! You will have much less choices! It’s obvious, JUST LOOK AROUND, ALL THE GOOD STUFF ARE BEING TAKEN UP! THIS IS WAR! Get into a relationship before you reach 30!

For some reason, people don’t seem to relate finding a job with being in a relationship; it’s quite similar if you asked me.

If you don’t need a job, fine. Don’t rant about it, it irritates people. ALOT. Seriously!

People will only offer you a real job, if they think the job suits you, so, be grateful and don’t brush it off yet.

If you are not well paid enough, ask for a raise, get better qualifications, improve yourself, use sex as leverage, whatever.

If you are not happy, and you have most definitely tried everything within your power, change the job.

By the time you are 30, you should have enough experience to know exactly what you want, how to get it, whether it is within your reach, what to ask for with regards to your ability, and most importantly, what to expect.

If enjoy perpetually job hopping, good for you!

Repeat after me: ANYTHING ELSE IS A BONUS. You know what a bonus is? Don’t bluff! ALL SINGAPOREANS LOVE BONUSES.

** That being said, some people are more easily content than others and they are always happy, or it is just the way they are that makes them who they are, and sometimes, all it takes is one job, it is really simple : )

By the way, talking about it is NOT doing something about it; anyway, whoever gave you the idea that talking about the lack of a partner will get you one? It is a freaking turn off! Complaining doesn’t work, trust me. Cos at the rate I was going I should have like 20 of them. At the end of the day, it is your own happiness and your future that you set out to create. Do you _really_ think that everyone has got nothing better to do than snigger behind your back when they find out you met your spouse in SDU? Nowadays SDU is like a sales event, the earlier you get in the queue, the more choices you have, and the more likely you’ll find “the one”. It is really just statistical, the more attempts you have, the better your score.

Bonus paragraph for the women out there (only because I love you girls): *preps loudspeaker* A wakeup call for you sleepers, this is the 21st century, women are enjoying sex (or at least pretending to be) as much as men. If you are the quiet type and you are waiting to for _that_ guy to make the first move, chances are if you like the guy, some other less deserving vulture will too. I’m not saying that women should always make the first move, or first strike = sure win, but if you asked me, I’ld rather go down in flames than lose without a fight, after all, that _could_ be your future you’re staking here. If you think your future is not important, please drop me an email, I will scold some sense into you.

For the guys: *HELLO* what’s _your_ excuse for not being in a relationship? REAL MEN DON’T TAKE BREAKS, REAL MEN MOVE FORWARD, REAL MEN ARE SHAMELESS, REAL MEN ARE FUN, and REAL MEN WILL FIND THOSE REAL WOMEN OUT THERE AND MAKE THEM HAPPY. *super lol* But it’s true, isn’t it?

At this point I may like to point this out the people who think like this:

All men are jerks

All men want sex

All men want more women

All women are bitches

All women are materialistic

I will end up being hurt or hurting someone in a relationship

People who think all of the above is true

You know what? It’s true, it’s all true. You have to accept that anyone, including yourself has ever played a role in one of the above. Personally, if you can’t accept that, how do you expect other people to accept your own faults? A relationship is NOT magical, there is NO happily ever after, there is NOTHING that works just out of the box. You have to WORK for your relationship to WORK. It is probably not clear enough because some of you folks just watch too much tv drama, some you have never been in a working relationship, and some of you practically live in Disneyland. You have GOT to be some kind of naive to actually think that everyone’s a mind reader, and everything will work your way. *please let me win toto this year I only need one win* RIGHT.

ALL RELATIONSHIPS ARE MAGICAL, YOU JUST NEED TO WORK FOR IT.

If you’ve ever been to Tokyo by yourself, you will know that it is ridiculously messy if you’re trying to find a particular store or location by yourself. Especially those areas which the locals go to for super authentic non touristy food/fun/sights. You will also know that the free maps from the airport are useless for these purposes, some streets are so tiny, that most locals don’t even know they exist, and even on taxis with GPS, they have to search for it. Don’t get me wrong, there is fun casually walking and bumping into new areas, but when you’re in a hurry, it is SUPER irritating.

Even most updated english travel guides don’t have detailed maps, I mean like you can’t expect them to tell you where each store in harajuku, or the blue label in shibuya is located, but you get what I mean.

This is not a joke, if you can figure out the shortest way to even get from the west side of shinjuku JR to the east side of shinjuku JR, please let me know, I’m dying to know. What I usually do is I take the JR pass walk into the station and cut across it, or I just walk around it (!?)

I have no idea why no one has ever compiled a list of maps that are available online, but since I’m already compiling for my friends, I might as well share it with you folks that are or might know someone else who is going to Tokyo.

The rar file is made up of maps from:

att-japan (PDF English, chiba, fukuoka, JR, kanagawa, kyoto, nagoya, nara, niigata, nikko park, osaka, sapporo, tokyo, yokohama, ripped from att-japan.net)

superfuture (GIF English, shopping maps, ripped from superfuture.com)

tcvb (PDF English/Japanese, Ginza, Marunouchi, Odaiba, Roppongi, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Asakusabashi, Ueno, Yanaka from tcvb.or.jp)

tokyoessentials (GIF English, Asakusa, Ikebukuro, Odaiba, Roppongi, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno)

Akihabara – (JPEG Japanese. There is a map which you can get from the station or just outside the station that is in ENGLISH, will most of the more popular shops. This is a life saver.)

infomapjapan.com (PDF English, Tokyo Asakusa, Ueno, Akihabara, Marunouchi, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi, Sapporo, Sendai, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Umeda, Kyobashi, Namba, Bay Area, Nara, Kyoto, Kyoto Station, Kawaramachi, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kobe, Takayama, Kurashiki, Okayama, ripped from infomapjapan.com

Personally I use a combination of google maps, virtual maps, a japanese travel magazine, and a bilingual map book which I happened to buy at a Kinokuniya while I was in Shinjuku. I would highly recommend a bilingual map as the local streets are usually written in Japanese, and most guidebooks are written in either Japanese or English only.

If you need a physical map, this is the one I’m using: Tokyo City Atlas: A Bilingual Guide (3rd Ed.)

For shopping fanatics, I would recommend a Japanese shopping magazine for girls. Yes, it exists, the Japanese magazine is very simple. There’s ONLY maps of Harajuku, Shinjuku, Omotesando, Shibuya, and Ginza. Sure, it’s in japanese, but it’s updated and if you need to shop, you need to shop, there’s always a way : D

There’s also a food guide, if you’re not rich enough (who is, seriously???) to try out all the food listed in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2010

And finally, here’s a preview of the maps which you can download from HERE (41 MB)

The first thing the usually pops up when you think of people and fences are, lonely dark skinned construction workers, and even lonelier house keepers. Well, that’s true in Singapore, as most people are either emo or lonely. The scenario usually looks like this, one loner will try to chat up the lonelier who’s situated behind the fence, and when someone looks at them, the loner will carry on chatting as if the world revolved around a lonely coconut trying to gaze up at the other bunch of coconuts that’s still on the tree, and the lonelier will shy away, as if everyone else is trying to pluck the bunch of coconuts. At least that’s the general idea.

As most of you guys might or might not have known, I’m pretty observant and a busybody when I’m alone or not, and I do one-to-several-to-many things that might get me cursed at on a regular basis by total unknown strangers. This involves, but not limited to, waving at random Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, on a weekly basis who drive past my office on the way to lunch (Their showroom is nearby), asking really inappropriate questions to everyone that looks like they have an answer to everything, and trying to give that English accent when I pickup complaint calls, and my current personal favourite, blading into crowds at east coast.

The point being, this is what I saw today: A container trailer parked opposite the road, which is relatively hard to cross, is empty, the uncle apparently took time to cross this road, hopped across (I’ld presume) a meter wide drain, just to chat with another guy on the other side of the fence. Now, this fence is the regular type of fence with wires interleaved, so you can hold them while crutching your fingers in a crutching shape, not to mention the gate for this particular fenced up factory is just about 20 metres away? So you can imagine how it looks like, 2 guys standing up, left hand on left waist, right hand kinda like pointing upwards while hold on to the fence, chatting with each other.

You know the times when you wished you had a 200 megapixel camera built into your head, and you had a wireless usb port to transfer that photo back into your computer and upload it to twitpic for everyone on facebook to see? Yes, this was one of those times.

Personally, with my twisted creativity, I could think of no logical reason why one person would park their humongous trailer on one side of the road, wade past traffic, jump over a drain, just to pose and chat. To make it even more complicated, their roles were reversed, and when I tried to take a photo nonchalantly (like one of those little kids trying to play with their new newfangled technogadgetry devices, pretending to sms), they actually stood further away, like they were guilty of something. When I mean further I mean like one step aside, but STILL holding on to the fence trying to appear as if they happened to walk past each other under the orchard underpass.

As a sidenote, this was the most interesting thing that happened to me on the way back from lunch, and yes, lunch is so dis-interesting that I had to make it more alive.

PS: If I ever run across the street with Maseratis racing along the road, and I happen to jump across a drain, to hold on to the fence just to chat with you, please shoot me first before I embarrass myself in front of people like myself, again.

I once had a wonderful love who’ld love me in return, a happy family which I’ld be proud to show everyone, a great job of which I could sleep till ungodly hours, and many good friends to who’s company could be enjoyed till daybreak. That period was one of the best times in my life.

I broke up before my birthday, because it was not going the way I wanted it to go for a pretty long time. It was not really anyone’s fault, and I don’t blame anyone for it, and I do still cherish the wonderful times we had while we were happily together.

My parents were in the middle of a divorce, it’s not something I’ld like to comment on as it’s not really my place, and I couldn’t really do anything about it. I’ve not invited people over to my place for a very long time, because I’m not too proud of what it has become.

I quit my job the beginning of last year, I’ll never go back to it, because it was getting too boring for me, and if I ever want to do it again, I’ll do it in a different way, one that will be more fulfilling for me.

Nowadays, I’m still left with many good friends, which is great, because not too many people that I know have many great friends. Unfortunately, since then, I’ve changed a little here and there. For one, I’ve been slightly less forgiving with my comments. For those who have known me long enough, I’m probably somewhere near that rebellious rude little fucker when I was around 19.

Basically, if you were one of the unfortunate ones whom I met from say, around ‘08, I was not exactly the same person I was before that. Then again, I have always been relatively nice enough to people to warrant a blind eye being turned when I say or do nasty things, so it’s actually not that bad, but I just wanted to say that could have been a much nicer person, if you had met me on a normal day.

I go to work with somewhat proper working attire shoes, pants and shirts, to show that I am serious about the job. Save the hair, I tried to lose the colours and do it black, but doing that really just made me lose my identity, so I kept the hair, the earring and the rings.

It’s not exactly easy to continue working as I have been for past year, there’s responsibilities from the job, ungodly expectations to meet, impossible tasks, family quarrels being mixed with work, not to mention falling out of love and profits. But I’m pretty proud of the decision I made to help out in the family business, considering that I have been pretty lucky in both of my businesses. It’s looking pretty stable now, with everyone trying to get it back on track, and I would love to expand it overseas. I am going to be the youngest, most eligible prince of fire fighting in the 7 seas! Save for my brother, if he decides to help out full time, then I will be the second youngest, but STILL the most eligible prince of fire fighting! : x

I wear two rings on my left hand to remind myself that I had loved and have been loved before, they will be there until the day I find a new person to love and be loved. I am sure that one day, I will be able to find this special person, who can reciprocate my love. As I have always been, I don’t care what other people say about putting too much effort to love another person, or if this person will ever appear in my life, or if I made the wrong decision with my last love. If I love again, I will put everything into it. I have done it once; I can do it again and again and again! Preferably not so many “agains” of course, one would be more than sufficient. I am confident that to say that, one day, I will be able to find such a person, and I will be able to make my special person smile and be happy with me for the rest of my life, as she will be able to make me smile and love her for the rest of her life.

I think I’ve finished almost everything I wanted to say, and finally for myself; it’s about time I fixed myself, since I’m pretty good at coming up with solutions and I have always been neglecting myself. I’m going to learn driving *gasp* by the end of this year, so that I can work sufficiently enough extra hours to earn optimise my “time spent in office” vs “time spent outside office”. Don’t worry guys, I won’t become a workaholic *HA!* I’ll probably be home by 7+.

Note to self: You wrote this entry, to remember the good days that you once had, and the great days you will create for yourself! If you’re in a rut, read this again, don’t give in to bad emotions, because you know, every second spent being unhappy, is a second wasted on being happy, and being happy is the most important thing to you! Don’t waste it! You’re not going to live long enough to regret wasting it!

There! I feel so much better! Take that, and that and that! You stupid 25 things about me meme!

Being an (ex)geek, I was stuck at the science section of kinokuniya for a few minutes. Ok, fine, it was more like half an hour, and I was chosing between a “how to apply statistics to everyday life” kind of book, to this “How Big is Your Brain?“.

Anyway I chose the big brain book, so this book is written by Ian Livingstone, the co-author from the Ian Livingstone / Steve Jackson Fighting Fantasy series. If at this point, you are still not interested, it’s either you are:

A fake gamer

Not a gamer

Having no idea what’s going on. Why are you reading this anyway? It won’t make any sense to you.

The cool thing about this book, is that it’s a somewhat IQ Quiz book, in a gamebook format. It’s almost like re-living your childhood! Hohohohoho! I’m so happy I found this gem.

Other than the fact that I’m really irritating, or so they say, it would seem that my friends know more about me than myself. Which is really surprising, therefore I shall I quote something I usually say:

You think your friends are the suck? Your friends are a reflection of yourself.

I’m not usually any good with people out performing me in any way that I deem to be important, so I went on to find out more about myself. As it seems, “personality test” brings out pretty much what I wanted. So after a whole series of tests, I find that I am an ENTP. Or at least what the test usually says (I’ve taken these like at least 6 times since I was 21, not that I ever paid any attention to it), the one I tried at facebook tells me I’m an INTP.

Extraversion – Introversion defines the source and direction of energy expression for a person. The extravert has a source and direction of energy expression mainly in the external world while the introvert has a source of energy mainly in the internal world.

Personally, I would think the general description of ENTP fits me more than the INTP. but it does bother me that my closer friends feel that I’m either an Introvert, or 50/50. After fussing about it for a while, I find that it is relatively true. Let’s see some examples:

I like to be at the centre of attention, and I like to be cooped up at home

I meet lots of new people at networking sessions for fun, but sometimes, I just feel like sitting there to be approached.

I avoid crowded places, holidays and events like the plague, a rainy evening will guarantee a cosy evening on my bed.

On rare occasions, I will randomly make friends with the nearest moving object.

Now that I have taken so many variations of Carl Jung & Briggs-Meyers, I believe it’s not accurate for me to take another one since I know which question is obviously an I or an E now : \ Generally I would say that this is quite interesting, considering that I think I know myself pretty well.

You think you know yourself? Try it. Another aspect is, it is able to recommend a type of job compatible to your personality, or a partner who can complement you, or the school you might want to trained in the future.

From what I read, it is common in japanese culture to base personalities, on blood types. The wiki doesn’t exactly give a comprehensive rundown on how it works, and the origin is little flaky, but generally, a specific blood group will have certain traits. Let me rip it off another site:

Type A: calm, composed, serious, reliable, perfectionist, arrogant, suppress their emotions
Type B: curious, bright, cheerful, enthusiastic, superficial, unreliable, selfish
Type 0: carefree, generous, independant, flexible, clumsy, flighty
Type AB: sensitive, considerate, careful, efficient, strict, moody

I find this method totally unreliable, and lack of scientific basis. But I believe that most japanese merely use blood types just for fun. So I’m type B+-, last I remembered.

Next up, horoscopes. I abhor going to soothsayers and fortune tellers and the whole bulk of them, because mainly, a part of me tells me I shouldn’t scold them in the face when they say something I don’t like at them, no matter how true it is, because they are doing their job. Plus, most of them are quacks anyway. That aside, I do believe that, on a certain level, it is actually quite scientific to me. Let me try to rationalise it properly, as I seem to have a problem convincing people.

According to what I know of astrology, everyone is born under a different star, and according to that, there you can generate a star chart based on a your birthday, time of birth. So what this chart does, is what I call, a visual representation of your entire lives. I think it is, somewhat similar to the fengshui/fortunetelling book.

So after the somewhat horrible ordeal at the bus stop which I thankfully didn’t die, I went to tokyo on very short notice. Luckily for me, I managed to spend about 13 days there before I had to come back for my Kash’s wedding, and my short talk at ngee ann.

So anyway, obviously this time round I had more time to spend in tokyo, aka more time to meet chicks, and more time to spend more money, but I’ll save it for another day since it’ll take too long if I include all the gory details. I’ll just fill in what’s important for now, ie. I DID NOT MANAGE TO GO SOAPLAND AGAIN!

And so I came back from tokyo, spent a few days off, and went off immediately to work for my Dad. I’m back to selling hoses! Redid the website (FINALLY), here’s how it looks: www.firearmour.com.sg Pretty good I must say, considering that it has some mistakes and it’s STILL in the top 10 if you search for “fire extinguisher singapore”, “fm200 singapore”, “halon singapore”.

I went for landmark advanced last last last FRI SAT SUN. Hmnmn. Gary’s leaving soon, and I might be going on another holiday from 27th to 2nd, if I can find out where’s ok for the both of us. Not me and Gary, obviously.

In short, I’m really busy at work, if you want to reach me, you’ll have to sms me or msn my other msn, the one that used to belong to my laptop. Sometimes I don’t even remember to turn on the msn, which is really sad.

What’s a blog post like without a quirky quote from me.

Time flies when you’re having fun. Also when you’re fucking busy.

So there. Just so in case anyone is trying to come up with a lame comment, here’s my pre-emp: “I DO NOT KNOW ANYONE CALLED BUSY”
